Lately everyone is struggling financially. I really can’t think of anyone who hasn’t been touched by the current economic recession. What I have noticed with the downturn in the economy is that people are choosing different sorts of gifts from years past.
When the economy was booming it was fun to give and receive these great gifts that were selected with care but were often glittery, glitzy and sparkly. I was touched and amazed recently when I witnessed an incredible expression of love and friendship at a birthday party.
One of the guests gave the birthday girl a beautiful printed scarf from the 60s. It was a little worn and had a tiny stain on the corner. The giver explained that it had been her mother’s and her mother had recently died. The giver was a single mom with two small children and money was extremely tight. When the giver explained the significance of the scarf there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
The scarf you see had been a favorite of the mother. The colors you see had always reminded the mother of her daughter’s friend. In fact, she often said she was wearing “Beverly’s” scarf.
Beverly held the scarf that belonged to her friend’s mother as if it was made from the finest silk. Beverly spoke about many funny conversations she had had with her friend’s mother. Not only did the scarf pay tribute to the giver’s mother but to the receiver as well. You see, the giver valued the friendship enough to share a sacred part of herself and memory of her mom.
