When people are in the military a long time they begin to form certain beliefs about themselves. Some are good. Some are not so good. Some are put in place to protect our hearts and minds from the challenges of war. When we shield ourselves from attack, that’s a good thing. When we keep those shields up with our friends, family and loved ones it might not be the best protocol.
How do we know when we are being guarded and defensive. Usually it’s hard to tell because we are so busy doing what we are doing. It takes a really strong person to tell you to drop your guard. And when they do, we need to listen. As we prepare ourselves for battle, we automatically shut off certain parts of ourselves and our personality. It’s necessary. We have a job to do. We have a responsibility to function effectively under extreme circumstances. Emotions don’t play a part in that equation. Emotions in that situation can get you killed.
So we shut off. How then do we turn back on when we get home? How do we put ourselves back into a place where we can feel? Where can we relax and enjoy ourselves? For many of us, that means actively telling ourselves that we are safe, it’s okay to feel and its okay to have emotion. Emotion is a good thing – it bonds us with our family and friends. It helps us process situations and let them go. It makes us possible to feel human again when many of us don’t.
