No one really likes to hear us complain. Have you ever noticed that complaining doesn’t solve anything? Complaining also doesn’t make us feel very good. There are ways to express discontent or unhappiness without complaining. This is the power behind choosing your words. No one expects you to be a Scrabble expert or consult a dictionary, but choosing your words in a way that empowers yourself and others can help you feel better about a situation. When we feel better about a situation, we are more able to make changes or change the situation for the better.
What do I mean? Saying things like “being in this situation sucks” brings you down and brings the people around you down. Acknowledging that the situation is not great but that this will pass is a whole different story. Try rephrasing, “I know it’s hard right now, but it’s not going to last forever” bring control, empowerment and an end to the negative feelings. Saying something sucks leaves you powerless and at the mercy of the situation. You are the victim. But claiming your power, noting that its not forever and putting your situation into perspective can make the difference between the will to survive and giving up. And we don’t give up until the job is done.
