I want you to try this. Grab a piece of paper and a pen and keep it with you for one day. Each time you find yourself thinking a negative thought – about yourself, about your situation, about the people around you, about anything keep track of it by making a hash mark on the paper. You know what I mean, keep score of your negative thoughts.
How many hashes did you make after one hour? How many hashes did you make after one day? If you are like most people, you think a lot more negative thoughts that you probably expected. I know I did. This simple exercise can help you regulate your thinking and actually think about what you are thinking.
In our overall question for happiness in our lives there is not much we can change about the external situation. There’s not much we can do about global hunger, the changing economy or the trials and tribulations in the world. What we can do is make ourselves aware of such thinking with the use of a simple pen and paper. Choose to change your outlook.
