There are so many things that we miss when we are on deployment. Mom’s home cooking. Reality TV Shows. Lazy hot Sunday afternoons sitting on the sand with a beer in our hand and a pole in the water. We even miss Wal-Mart! So what do we do? We can’t run home every time nostalgia hits. We can however actively make a memory to take with us. Sounds crazy? Try it and it won’t feel crazy at all.
I was home recently and feeling complete and utter safe, loving relaxation. I looked at the mountains and memorized their lines and colors. I stuck my feet in the cool water at the end of our beach and felt the icy chill and the movement of the waves. I felt the sand beneath me and buried my hands in the tide feeling the grainy sand. I focused on the sensations of my hands and feet engulfed by the water I studied it. I felt it. I pulled every sensation I could into my body – from the salty sweet smell of the ocean to the rhythmic pounding of the waves against the shore.
Then I replayed all those thoughts in my head a few times. Painting a picture in my mind but allowing my senses to fill up in that moment. Then I locked it down. Just like a tie wrap over a rucksack, I bundled all of that into one place and tucked it away. Now when I miss home, or I am stressed, I can breathe for a moment and put myself back in my favorite place for a few moments. It’s there I find peace.
So the next time you are with your family, sitting somewhere that is special to you, or at a baseball game take in for a moment all the sights, sounds and smells to make a memory intentionally that can be carried with you wherever your travels take you.
