Did you ever notice that certain thoughts trigger certain feelings? Then those feelings trigger memories that have feelings attached to them that trigger more thoughts? Did you even notice that most of the time this leads us down the path to being nervous, afraid or upset?
The mind anchors feelings and bodily responses in associate with certain memories and thoughts. Think about someone who has done something in the past that you found was particularly unpleasant. Did you find yourself feeling angry or sad? Did your heart rate rise? Did your cheeks flush? The event was over years ago but still our thoughts have the power of rousing our emotions. Thoughts can trigger feelings of happiness, pleasure, delight, sadness, fear and anxiety.
I am going to ask you for the next 24 hours to think about your own thoughts. Sound funny? At first it feels strange to think about your own thinking, but something wonderful happens when we do. We learn how to manage our own thoughts and stop those that come to us that don’t help us in our current situation.
If certain thoughts make you anxious, unhappy or stressed becoming aware of them is the first step in changing your thinking. Try it. And then once you find yourself going down that road and you think, “here we go again” know that you are on top of the situation and have the power to stop that train of thought. Merely the recognition of stopping troublesome thinking is enough to make a marked improvement in most people’s level of happiness. Best thing…there’s nothing to lose and everything to gain.
