In talking to many of our military wives the subject of being left behind troubles many of our service members’ families. While the spouse is off fighting, and we want him to do our best, it’s often the unsung hero’s job to manage the home front. For many of us, this means dropping into single mother mode with little or no support available from a deployed partner. But being a single mother or father is not the same as having a deployed spouse.
The spouse at home cannot date or go out to meet someone else. They must deal daily with the loneliness, fear frustration, isolation and single parenting difficulties. The one thing that really separates the military spouse from the single parent is the worry that today might be the last day they hear from their partner. Or that their partner is hurt, injured and alone, and they are not there to help. These are unique conditions that only affect the military spouse whose partner is on deployment. It’s important to acknowledge just how hard it is and the emotional price they pay for loving someone who has gone off to fight.
I would like to honor those left behind to tend to the home fires and commend them for their bravery, their honesty, their sacrifice and their strength. The entire military earns every ribbon, every medal and every commendation as a team.
