There is an old adage that comes to mind when we think of military procedures. You can’t know what you don’t know. It sounds trite and it probably is, but when it comes to happiness, you can’t know what you don’t know. One of the things that most people are not taught as part of their growing up is that happiness is a choice.
Ever notice how you meet two people coming back from the same deployment and one is elated and the other is deflated. More of then than not, both of them experienced roughly the same situation. Why is one joyful and the other somber. Often it comes down to choice. The power to choose how to react and continue to react to the same set of circumstances. This is self-mastery.
Some people seem to be just born happy. Is that the case, or did they discover early on or were taught that we can choose how we respond to a situation. Often that’s all the choice we have especially in the military. We all get the same food, the same conditions and the same equipment for the most part. So why do some sail through and other’s struggle. It comes down to choosing how you are going to react to the situation. One of the things I want you to know that you might not know is that we can’t always control the situation, but we can control how we react. Learning to choose our responses, learning to choose our reactions can create that happy person that most believe is born that way. Choosing happiness is hands down a better way to live than being a victim to our own thoughts and emotions.
