By now you ought to be getting pretty good at recognizing the feelings, thoughts and behaviors associated with stress and PTSD. If you’re not, or you are just joining us, please check out the first four articles in this series to help you help yourself. We know that a key component of healing is your own participation in you!
So let’s talk about some of the physical sensation or what happens to your body when you are under stress. Remember, no one is exactly alike and not ever situation is the same so some of these may apply and some may not – and they can vary in intensity.
Do you suffer from frequent aches and pains in your head?
Do you suffer from frequent aches and pains in your back and neck?
Does your stomach hurt or do you have irritable bowels?
Are you sick a lot and do you have a lot of little health troubles?
Is it hard to sleep soundly – do you ever wake up in a panic or afraid?
Do you find yourself sleeping too much or too little?
Do you see changes in how much you eat as in too much or too little for you?
Do you see changes in your sex life – too much or no interest at all?
Do you suffer from ulcers or breakouts or rashes?
Do you have trouble breathing?
Does your heart pound erratically or you feel tightness in your chest?
Do your hands or jaw ache from clenching?
These are some of the ways our bodies react when we are stressed. Noticing these ailments or recognizing when you move that these things are happening are a good indication that trouble is brewing.

Science has proven that massage is therapeutic. Massage helps lower our pulse rate, our blood pressure and divert our attention from our heads to our bodies bringing us into the moment. When we are in the moment, we cannot ruminate about the past or worry about the future. Having a professional massage is not a luxury. In fact, most insurance policies now allow a series of massage to help promote stress release and overall well-being. Most massage therapists are trained to adapt their techniques to accommodate physical challenges and health issues. Contact your provider for details. If you do not live near a massage therapy center, then ask your partner, child or friend to help soothe you with a kind and loving touch.
