Change is difficult. Military life is full of changes. We change rank. We change locations. We make new friends and we say good bye to new friends more often than not. Its time to pick up and go. Its time to learn a new skill. Changes happen all the time whether we are ready for them or not. Changes bring fear, trepidation and uncertainty to an already uncertain situation.
It sounds tough, but the faster you learn to accept change is a natural part of life and a huge part of military life the better. How do you do this? One good way to start is training your brain to embrace change. Write this sentence on a piece of paper and stick it in your pocket. Type it into your phone and remind yourself daily until it becomes ingrained in your being.
“Change is good. Change is part of my daily life. We all change. Situations change. What I knew to be true today can change tomorrow. Change is part of my life and I will handle the changes gracefully as they come.”
Learning to embrace change means we recognize that it exists and we take the confusion, sting and negativity out of it. Learning to reframe change into a positive light – new friends, new adventures, and new experiences can bring some ease of transition into your family. Most career military families move on average 9 times in a single childhood. That means 9 schools, 9 cities, 9 sets of friends and 9 new malls for most kids. Teaching them early to embrace change can help them navigate through the often confusing and stressful aspects of military life.
