I learned this technique from my good friend Janine Wilburn at Touchnology. We were talking about how difficult it is these days to keep focused on moving forward and not get mired down in the gloom and doom predicted almost by the minute in today’s media.
It’s not a story if it doesn’t garner attention and let’s face it, bad news gets attention. We can’t help it most times – its human nature. We gawk at traffic accidents. We stop and listen to the latest celebrity divorce gossip. News of the weird? Google it – third to searches only to pornography and online gambling. But just like too many happy meals, what we crave and are drawn to are not the best for us – and certainly not the best to help us through critical situations which require mental fitness.
I was having a particularly difficult day financially. Clients hadn’t paid. Bills are piling up. I was doing everything in my power to handle the situation but emotionally I felt scared, drained and frustrated. I decided to employ Janine’s technique.
Each time I found my mind going down the path of what if and catastrophic thinking I replaced those negative, self-defeating and crippling thoughts with “there is gold dust in the air.” It made me smile. More importantly it stopped me from going down the path of thinking that would leave me depressed, lethargic and struggling to get through my day.
Did the “gold dust thinking” pay my bills? Nope, nor did it lessen my workload. But it did lighten my spirit, fill me with hope and give me energy to keep reaching for the stars and move myself forward. The high cost of living still existed. The reward of replacing my negative thinking with powerful thoughts was priceless.
