While there are little steps to take to relieve depression, depression is no light matter. You do need to daily focus on renewing your perspective, plan to leave the house or distract your mind, and struggle to get out of bed and move around. You need to build up friendships, and keep your life full of varied activities. But depression can be helped…especially if you conquer the underlying reasons for your depression.
Maybe you have a genetic predisposition towards depression, or perhaps you are caught up in negative thinking, or perhaps there is a past relationship, trauma, or event that cause these cycles to begin. The causes of depression can run deep. It is important to look at our pasts and see we are still struggling with every day, and find healing matters. If you have experienced loss of a loved one, or a friend who was a civilian or in the combat zone with you, then it may help to seek a grief counselor. In addition, you may choose to include journaling, distraction, and venting. You may want to look up symptoms of PTSD, which are common for those dealing with traumas of any sort, and see what symptoms you posses. Read articles, especially on this site, for handling grief, anxiety, anger, and stress. You may need to allow yourself to grieve properly, or talk to a therapist about a childhood event or recent trauma. Do not hold the wound inside and let it fester. Let it out to be bandaged and healed. There is no one or right way to heal. There are proven strategies to help. There are many roads leading to greater wellbeing.
During this time, hold onto that trusted support group, to work your way through these events, and remember the lessons we have mentioned in these blogs. As you work through your life every day, you can slowly build up your mind, body, soul, and spirit. Remember who you are, and who you were created to be, and don’t let anyone else—including the black dog of depression—try to convince you that you are less.
