If I could just….I would be happy. Be thinner? Win the lottery? Find my keys?
Conditional thinking about happiness is one of the primary obstacles to being happy. Why you ask? Because your happiness is now contingent upon a set of circumstances over which you usually have no control. Conditional happiness thinking gives the power of your own personal satisfaction over to a scale, a random drawing, achievement, object or person of desire.
Funny thing about conditional happiness is it’s never satisfied – or at least stays satisfying for long. Think back to someone you really wanted and go. How long did you stay satisfied until you longed for something or someone else? Placing your happiness in the hands of objects or other people makes for a very fickle mistress. Conditional happiness – the thinking that I will be happy when and if “whatever happens” sets you up for disappointment.
The challenge is to change that thinking and pull your happiness into the now. Start by making a list of what you are happy about today. Continue by choosing to practice happiness as a way of life despite the external circumstances.
