By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness 4 Heroes

I had lunch the other day with a single mother friend of mine.  She was worried and upset that her ex-husband was providing toys, video games, treats and all sorts of material goods for her sons where she was struggling to make ends meet. To compound matters, the ex-husband’s girlfriend delighted in dressing up her kids in the latest fashions.

How do I compete? She asked me.  They are so happy with all the prizes they get over there.  What do I have to offer, but long hours and the occasional treat.  My friend was struggling with the concept of temporary happiness versus lasting happiness. Of course her kids would be thrilled over the latest video game, but that will be forgotten when the next present arrives.  I told my friend she had a great opportunity in this very common situation in divorces, she gets to teach her sons that one does not create happiness through indulgence – whether it is indulgence by a parent or by the child themselves.

I helped her see that teaching her children about sustainable happiness, and how to find their own through mindfulness and authenticity not through indulgence and consumerism was a powerful lesson that could last a lifetime.  So when challenges arise in parenting, especially in a competitive divorce, choose to search for the less.  Find the tools that you can give as a gift to your child. Leading by positive example is the greatest gift we can give our children.
